Robert Samuelson has provided piano tuning, repairs, regulating, voicing and maintenance, as well as purchasing advice and appraisals to customers throughout the greater Seattle area since 1988. Robert is a Registered Piano Technician with the Piano Technicians Guild.
TUNING
A PIANO SHOULD BE TUNED ONCE OR TWICE A YEAR DEPENDING ON HOW OFTEN IT IS PLAYED.
A piano has more than two-hundred strings, each of which must be individually tuned to a particular pitch. Each pitch must, in turn, relate to the pitch of the other strings so that a regular series of tonal intervals is produced across the entire range of notes, from the lowest bass to the highest treble.
REGULATION
A PIANO WILL PLAY NOTICEABLY BETTER WITH REGULATION.
Regulation is the adjustment of the mechanical aspects of the pianos to compensate for the effects of wear, the compacting and settling of cloth, felt, and buckskin, as well as dimensional changes in wood and wool parts due to changes in humidity. Keeping the correct relationship between every part will prevent unnecessary wear, and will allow playing to be smooth and even.
VOICING
EACH PIANO IS UNIQUE. IT HAS ITS OWN TONAL CHARACTER, SINGING QUALITY,
AND NEEDS TO BE VOICED ACCORDINGLY.
The piano hammer is comprised of layers of compressed wool, giving it a resilience that helps it to rebound from the string. In order to produce a tone that is full, rich and balanced, the hammer should have a rounded, egg-shaped end. With wear, the hammer becomes flattened and grooved on the end, producing an edgy, metallic, and brittle tone. Voicing involves restoring the original shape and resiliency of the hammer by filing away layers of felt and needling.
PIANO REBUILDING
A PROPERLY RESTORED PIANO WILL PLAY AND SOUND BEAUTIFUL AGAIN.
Piano rebuilding focuses on replacement/repair of deteriorated structural components. It can involve restringing, pinblock replacement, bridge repair or replacement, soundboard repair, etc. Usually the replacement of mechanical parts are indicated as well.
The objective is to restore the piano to its original specifications, resulting in tonal clarity, power and overall beauty. It also adds many years to its life. Many older pianos, once restored will sound and perform as well or better than many of the new instruments on the market today, and at less cost.
